Acquire the Fizzle

Good afternoon boys and girls! Why are you at SNU?

Better question, "Why do you not want to be at SNU?"

Answer: chapel.

On this bright and shining morning we were blessed [I know I was] with the music of the Platter brothers. Please, Jonathan, try to sing with a little less passion in your voice. I was so moved by the monotonous melody you were singing [the Spirit was practically plodding through my veins] that I almost had to get up and start running the aisles.

The exit music was nice, though. It made the already enjoyable exodus even more enjoyable.

His Holiness played his favorite game again today: Hide-and-go-speak. I found him! Did you?

Oh, and thanks, Bradley, for bringing up the skit from a couple weeks ago. Re-enjoying my eggs Benedict was exactly the experience I needed to get my morning going.

You are what you do. You are what you eat. You are what you wear. You are who you associate with. You are who I say you are. You are your parents, re-imagined. You are Rick James, bitch. You are the Dalai Lama reincarnate.
You are a sad, strange, little man, and you have my pity. You get the point.

"Why are you really at SNU? This isn't a guilting chapel, or anything. . ." No? Not a guilting chapel? Parading students in front of us and having them say how they work in local and overseas missions that have dramatically changed their lives, implying that this is what our identity should be is not guilting? What was today then, Bradley? Perhaps by asking, "Why are you at SNU," your intent was to say, "If you are here and don't look like these kids, get the hell out."

As for those students who got up on stage and shared their stories, I beseech you with the same request I made of Mr. Platter. Could you please speak with a little more passion? I mean, if your life has really been changed by the missions that you are involved in it should be evident in the way you speak. Flatly reading your own notes from a piece of notebook paper does very little in the way of getting other students motivated to jump on the train. If MLKJ had been as excited about his "I Have a Dream" speech as you three were about sharing your stories, we'd still have "whites only" water-fountains.

Two days of lame chapels? And Dunnington coming up next week? Wow. If I didn't know any better I'd say someone was trying to bore us to tears.

"Keep near me and you will be safe."

Seriously, you can never see the good in anything anyone does up on that stage. Sharing your testimony in from of your peers is not exactly the easiest task. Sorry we can't all be so loquacious and "passionate" as a high and lofty thinker as yourself. Maybe a reason for students finding it hard to be passionate on stage is because they know there is self-absorbed asshole sitting in the back of every chapel. Snickering to themselves at the next witty line they came up with for their oh so crafty blog.

Get a clue.

I can seriously appreciate what you are trying to do. Opening up the minds of others to other trains of thoughts and getting healthy discussion going about touchy subjects. It's great and I love it, but you are doing it wrong.

You want to have deeper thinking and discussion, but when it comes to your comments of chapels and what "his holiness" says you don't look past the initial message. You label it automatically as inferior, which contradicts your very own goal!

The reading level of newspapers is written at the 3rd grade level, you know why that is? So everyone, or a large majority can read it and understand. It's almost the same way with chapel you need to have a message that the large majority can be able to understand. Some people just aren't as far along on the walk as others, but those that are farther along their walk will have to dig deeper themselves to get more challenging ideas. If you speak to the "thinkers" and others who are closer to God than you will leave a large portion of people out.

ha I think it is funny Democitus that you said "self absorbed asshole"
Is that Godly?
Daedalus is only expressing "her" thoughts and I promise that these opinions exist in other people as well.

If I was an outsider looking in at the church I would not want to be involved based off chapel. I am sorry. The majority of the people that lead the worship do not bring the passion of God.

I think Daedalus is just calling out what non christians see and think about the church. I love Jesus, but I am all for admitting that our bible belt culture needs to change.

i'm yearning for some depth in your posts as of late. something a bit more meaningful than bashing people willing to not be anonymous in front of their student body.

one thing i am trying hard to understand is why you don't seem to admire the some of what the student's had to say today. i especially appreciated the first student's comments and the way that she has immersed herself in the ministry that she feels god has called her to. i have heard you say more than once on this blog whenever the topics of missions or things overseas are brought up that you are upset that we don't look right here in our own city for the needs of others. i think she has, and i think she deserves some accolades amongst your sarcastic garbage of bashing.. i mean, blog.

what would you like to discuss within this post? i'm missing it.

what i am hearing is someone who took brad's question and turned it into a statement.

i would love to know your answer to his question.

you sir are a jerk. when you feel like you have the most perfect answer to the question, then you can answer.

until then, dont stick up your nose at anybody.

all daedalus is saying is people need more passion. and honestly, it wouldnt hurt anything. im not trying to be rude or bash people. but saying you would love to know his or her answer to the question is very rude. and that kind of holier than thou motivation is one of the biggest things the church does to run people off. make your own blog and be that way then. :)

It is quite possible that "she"(Daedalus) is stuck here like so many of us. We can't transfer out because SNU's credit hours do not transfer well to many schools. Such hours include general education classes, mainly religious, that won't transfer. Another explanation is maybe they were not informed of the chapel requirement. I know that the admissions staff has failed to give certain details of SNU's policies and requirements in the past. These are a couple of reasons why some of us are still here. Not all of us were brainwashed as teens to only think SNU for college, so we expect a little more out of our educational experience. Also, it was said in an earlier blog, Daedalus is not unsatisfied with the education "she" is receiving just some of the other things that come with SNU, namely chapel.
